  Marking the start of the Kisser-led phase with Derrick Green on vocals, "Against," dropped in 1998, stands as Sepultura's first album without Max Cavalera, though his brother Igor stayed on drums till 2006. Guitarist Andreas Kisser stepped up, bringing in Derrick Green from Ohio to front the band. I wasn't sure this combo would gel, given Sepultura's Brazilian roots, but here we are, 25 years on, with the core trio—Andreas, Derrick, and bassist Paulo Jr.—still going strong. While Max's time saw some solid albums, like "Chaos A.D." (1993), I'm more into the Kisser/Green era. Kisser's always been the better guitarist, and since Max left, he's shown that Sepultura can keep delivering great albums, many of them creative concept pieces. Some are outstanding, like "Nation" (2001) and "Machine Messiah" (2017), my top picks, but they're all versatile and solid. "Against" was their first shot at this new lineup, and it works well enough to prove they could move forward. Green's a powerful vocalist and frontman, even better than Max, but the three standout tracks are instrumentals—"Kamaitachi," "Tribus," and the closer "T3RCERMillenniuma." The best song with Derrick is the longest, "Hatred Aside," featuring Jason Newsted, still in Metallica then, on baritone guitar, percussion, theremin, and vocals. The rest of the tracks are short, punchy bursts of tribal energy. "Against" is good, but it's just a taste of the amazing stuff to come. The fifteen tracks run about 47.5 minutes. GRADE: B/B+

  This album and LP are absolutely fantastic. The sound quality is top-notch. It's one of my all-time favorite Sepultura albums, and I've been a fan since "Arise" dropped. When Max Cavalera left, it was a huge shock to all of us Sepultura lovers, and honestly, it still is. While their post-Max albums have been a bit inconsistent, this one, being their first without him, is a total banger. Probably their best release since Max left. If you're one of those haters, give it a shot and don't go in expecting the old Sepultura. Just take it for what it is—a masterpiece. Personally, I'm a big fan of Derrick Green's vocals. He's a beast and nails that early Sepultura sound, which works perfectly for me as he can sing both eras like a pro.
