There's still some noise even after giving it a good clean. I wouldn't expect this from modern colored vinyl records. It feels like they cut corners on this one. The sleeve isn't anything special - I get that it wasn't a "premium" release, but a lined inner would've been a nice touch. Apart from the quiet parts, the sound is fantastic. The label says white and blue marble, but it's actually red, white, and blue - not a big deal, and it's cool to have it to match my SOTT peach vinyl.
It's about time they remastered this one. The audio quality is fantastic. That being said, I'm really let down by the packaging. I mean, for a 40th anniversary edition with no extra liner notes is just unacceptable. This album was such a shift from Purple Rain, he was clearly exploring new directions. There's so much depth in his songwriting during this period. I'm still rating it 5 stars because it's one of his masterpieces and the sound quality is top-notch.
Comparing this SHM CD to the original 1985 CD, it's got a warmer, more vinyl-like sound, which I personally prefer as the '85 version feels a bit sterile. The main differences are some slight EQ tweaks and a minor volume shift, but nothing major. If you're a fan of this album, I'd suggest grabbing the SHM CD.
I'm right there with everyone else griping about how lackluster this release is. No booklet, no fresh liner notes, flimsy inner sleeves, and three LPs crammed into packaging meant for two. Disappointing to the estate, really. BUT, it sounds incredible. I've been putting it up against the original 1985 vinyl release, and the upgrade is clear as day. Bass is much richer, vocals are better balanced, and the overall sound is deeper, warmer. Ah well, you can't have everything, I guess.
I'm at a loss as to why they keep releasing these deluxe editions on black vinyl. The priciest versions ought to be on colored vinyl, and any bonus visual content should come on Blu-ray.
