This album is definitely a timeless piece that everyone should have in their collection. It's quite an auditory experience, to say the least. There's hardly a moment of quiet; it's mostly just intense, layered instrumentals with barely any breaks. I notice some distortion in the lower end, particularly the bass and kick drum. There's a fair bit of squashing on the sound, vocals included. It's the only album I own that leaves my ears feeling tired. On certain tracks, the snare drum could use more clarity; might be a recording issue, though. By the time Randy Brecker kicks off his solo, my ears are grateful for the breather. Maybe I'm just getting older, but I'm not having any issues with my Ramones or Sabbath records.
Born to Run is an absolute classic. It's definitely one of Springsteen's finest creations. It's just hilarious because I've got a version of this that's clearly a fake, no pressing info or label logo, and it still sounds incredible! Whoever made this bootleg did a fantastic job, because it was a bargain and it sounds just as good as the real deal.
Listening to this on vinyl for the first time was an absolute delight! The energy, at least on this copy, was through the roof. It blew my CD and Hi-Res streaming version out of the water. I've always enjoyed albums that take you on a musical journey, but I never truly felt that before experiencing it on vinyl. It was usually just a handful of great tracks with some okay filler. But this time, it was a high-energy, explosive adventure that still managed to sound dynamic. I gained a whole new appreciation for "Meeting Across the River." Firstly, it gave me a much-needed sonic and energy break before diving into the epic "Jungleland," which I never realized I needed before. Secondly, and this might sound contradictory, but it became a soulful powerhouse of a song on vinyl, or at least on this copy. What an incredible experience this was!
This is the mastering that Steve Hoffman prefers, as talked about here. The EAC levels are 73.4, 89.4, 69.8, 72.1, 66.7, 61.0, 58.2, 74.5, and the EAC time is 39:34:07. Make sure the matrix has the letter 'A' to get this mastering (like 31A8), not 'B'. If there's a 'B', then you've got the later mastering.
Watch out for those trying to scam you. Anyone selling a version of this for just a few hundred dollars and has no reviews is definitely a scam. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
