Product Description

This LP was released in 2018.

Jon Hassell's "Listening To Pictures," released on June 8, 2018, under his own label Ndeya, is a captivating exploration of ambient, minimalist, and avant-garde soundscapes. This 38-minute journey through eight meticulously crafted tracks offers a unique blend of drone and experimental textures, showcasing Hassell's distinctive approach to sound and composition.

The album begins with "Dreaming," a gentle introduction that sets the tone for the immersive experience that follows. "Picnic" and "Slipstream" build on this foundation, layering subtle melodies and rhythmic elements that draw the listener in. "Al Kongo Udu" introduces a more percussive element, while "Pastorale Vassant" offers a serene, almost pastoral interlude.

"Manga Scene" brings a dynamic shift, with intricate sound design and a sense of movement that contrasts with the more static pieces. "Her First Rain" returns to a more ambient feel, evoking a sense of tranquility and introspection. The album concludes with "Ndeya," a piece that ties together the various themes and textures explored throughout the record.

Hassell's work on "Listening To Pictures" is a testament to his innovative spirit and his ability to push the boundaries of ambient and experimental music. Whether you're a longtime fan of Jon Hassell or new to his work, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

  • Hassell's Ethno-Ambient Gem

This album is fantastic, leaning more towards the "Fourth World" ethno-ambient vibe than jazz. The copy I have is super quiet and sounds great. It's a solid addition to Hassell's discography.

  • Innovation Overlooked in Remix

While the 'pentimento' approach implies a transformation of the original material, isn't it asking for too much to hope that not every song has that cut-and-paste glitchy feel? It feels like some of the collaborators could use a fresh burst of creativity instead of just lifting ideas from their Raster Noton peers. It's a decent album, certainly not ambient or anything you'd zone out to. Maybe Jon should team up with the Orb and Richard Devine next, perhaps each taking a side.
