Product Description

This LP was released in 2020.

Brad Mehldau's "Suite: April 2020" is a captivating jazz album released on June 12, 2020, under the Nonesuch label. Clocking in at 40 minutes, this album is a reflective journey through a series of piano compositions that capture the essence of a month spent in isolation during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mehldau, known for his introspective and nuanced playing, offers a deeply personal and evocative exploration of the emotions and experiences of that time.

The album begins with "I. waking up" and takes the listener through a day in the life of April 2020, with tracks like "II. stepping outside," "III. keeping distance," and "IV. stopping, listening: hearing." Each piece is a snapshot of a moment, a feeling, or a memory, painted with Mehldau's signature sensitivity and technical prowess. The suite is interspersed with reinterpretations of classic songs like "Don't Let It Bring You Down," "New York State of Mind," and "Look for the Silver Lining," adding a layer of familiarity and comfort to the collection.

Mehldau's playing is both intimate and expansive, with each note carefully chosen to convey the mood and atmosphere of the moment. The album is a testament to his ability to transform personal experiences into universal emotions, making it a resonant and relatable listen. Whether you're a longtime fan of Brad Mehldau or new to his work, "Suite: April 2020" is a compelling addition to his discography and a poignant reflection on a time that has touched us all.

  • Pandemic Jazz Piano Gem

    4 out of 5 stars
    tutonocz13 September 2025United States🇺🇸

This is truly a delightful album. Solo jazz piano albums, or original compositions, are not so common nowadays. (Even Bill Evans's solo works were often standards.) It's likely one of the earliest musical responses to the pandemic, as it was recorded just a month after the shutdowns began here in the US. (I believe Mehldau was stranded in the Netherlands, or someplace.) Absolutely worth a listen. That being said, I've typically found that Nonesuch releases aren't the quietest albums out there. This one is indeed relatively quiet, so there are quite a few little pops throughout, despite my efforts to clean it up. But it's not too bad.

  • Life's Suite During Weird Times

Just got mine today (number 650) and I totally see what Dramned meant. It's an amazing 'notion of a suite', perfectly portraying how life's been during these weird times.

  • Brad's Art Captivates Decades

Brad's work has captivated me for more than ten years. This specific series is absolutely phenomenal. I'm the proud owner of #590 out of 1,000.

  • Lockdown Piano Reflections

    5 out of 5 stars
    Xxeryif27 June 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

A simple, unadorned grey sleeve made of raw cardboard, featuring printed thoughts and aspirations about this album, along with a signed print of a self-taken photo. It's pure, stripped-down, and minimalistic. The vinyl is substantial and flat, with absolutely no background noise—just the piano and the palpable atmosphere. It feels as if you're sitting right next to the piano. The music isn't as complex as you might expect from a remarkable artist like Mehldau. It's not a polished, intricately crafted suite. Rather, it's more of a suite concept, a snippet of self-reflection, an emotional response to the feelings that the lockdown, with all its fears and uncertainties, brought to each of us during these peculiar times. In my view, this is the perfect way to make these bewildering feelings tangible and understandable, and it's the most consistent and heartfelt approach from the heart to the piano keys and to the listener. I genuinely adore this rare piece of direct and deeply moving art, which will serve as a musical time capsule someday when we've all moved past this oppressive Covid-19 era.
