I stumbled upon this record for just 16 euros at a second-hand shop. The cover's a bit worn, but the vinyl itself is in nearly flawless condition. As it turns out, this is the best-sounding version of „The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady“ I've ever come across – it even outshines the more expensive „from the original tapes“ and supposedly „all analogue“ 2019 reissue. Either the seller had no idea what they were selling or I got incredibly lucky. Regardless, this is a true hidden treasure for Mingus fans who can't justify the cost of an original 60s pressing in good condition. That being said, for comparison's sake, this German 1985 DMM pressing makes the 2019 Impulse! reissue sound like a bootleg or a poorly digitized fake. The 1985 DMM will remain my favorite version of this classic album until I find an ex/nm original that doesn't break the bank – which, let's be honest, probably won't happen anytime soon. So, this version is „it“ for me & my collection. If you're on the hunt for a great-sounding and still affordable pressing of this LP, grab the 85 German DMM. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. In the meantime, I'll be listing my (supposedly) mint 2019 reissue for sale :)
No need to stress about dropping $150+ on an original. This reissue is really really great. It's got a huge soundstage and packs a punch.
The sound quality of this pressing is fantastic and it's sourced from the original master tape.
Never would've guessed this vinyl was mastered by Rainbo Records. The audio quality is absolutely stunning!
