Product description

This is a 2024 Reissue released as a LP.

Pat Metheny's debut album, "Bright Size Life," is a seminal work in the jazz fusion genre, recorded in December 1975 and released on ECM Records in March 1976. This groundbreaking album showcases Metheny's innovative guitar playing and his unique approach to composition, blending jazz, rock, and folk influences into a cohesive and captivating sound. The trio, featuring the legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius and drummer Bob Moses, delivers a dynamic and virtuosic performance that has stood the test of time.

The album opens with the title track, "Bright Size Life," a lively and intricate piece that immediately showcases Metheny's distinctive guitar work. "Sirabhorn" follows, offering a more contemplative and melodic exploration, while "Unity Village" provides a taste of the folk-inspired elements that Metheny would continue to develop throughout his career. "Missouri Uncompromised" and "Midwestern Nights Dream" delve deeper into the fusion territory, with complex rhythms and soaring melodies that highlight the chemistry between the trio. The album concludes with "Round Trip / Broadway Blues," a dynamic and energetic finale that leaves the listener eager for more.

"Bright Size Life" is a testament to Pat Metheny's early genius and his ability to push the boundaries of jazz fusion. The album's intricate compositions, virtuosic performances, and innovative use of guitar effects have made it a classic in the genre, inspiring countless musicians and leaving an indelible mark on the world of jazz. Whether you're a longtime fan of Pat Metheny or a newcomer to his music, "Bright Size Life" is an essential addition to any jazz fusion collection.

  • Solid but Clinical Reissue

    4 out of 5 stars

I haven't got an original copy to compare this with, but it sounds absolutely fantastic. The dynamics and clarity are top-notch. That said, with my extensive collection of jazz guitar records from the 60s and 70s, I'm pretty sure the original must sound even better. It's not on par with a Tone Poet or Acoustic Sounds reissue, but it's still a solid copy to have. The reason I say it doesn't hold a candle to a Tone Poet or Acoustic Sounds reissue is the mastering quality. It comes across as a bit too clinical and sterile for an AAA pressing, lacking that warmth. It reminds me more of a Verve by request (Third Man pressing) hi-res digital transfer pressed on vinyl. But don't get me wrong, it's not a bad sounding record by any means. I've got a microline stylus, so maybe that's why I didn't pick up any distortion.

  • Jazz Guitar Passion Ignited

    5 out of 5 stars
    gixoZG_July 13, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album holds a special place in my heart, serving as the spark that ignited my passion for jazz guitar. I'd been on the lookout for a pristine vinyl version for quite some time, ready to pay whatever it took to get a good one. To my delight, this immaculate copy turned up at Amoeba and I grabbed it without a second thought. I won't go on about the performance. If you're here, you're already aware that this is a groundbreaking release from the now legendary PM. Plus, Jaco really gets to shine here, which is a genuine treat.

  • Vinyl Hunt Pays Off

    3 out of 5 stars
    yruqyvMay 25, 2025United States🇺🇸

There's a bit of a tale with this record. I noticed ECM was planning to reissue it on vinyl, so I pre-ordered a copy. But when mine arrived, it had some distortion problems. I sent it back to the store, and they struggled to find a replacement. In the end, I tracked down a great original copy here, and it sounds amazing.

  • Japanese Pressing Audio Excellence

    5 out of 5 stars
    kaveftuyae741February 11, 2025United States🇺🇸

This Japanese pressing of Bright Size Life from ECM is an absolute treasure when it comes to audio quality. The sound is flawless – extraordinarily detailed, sparkling clear, and remarkably expansive. Each note from Metheny’s guitar feels organic and lively, while Jaco Pastorius’ bass hums with impressive accuracy and richness.

  • Disappointing Sound Quality

    5 out of 5 stars
    fyavtucuaftaOctober 11, 2024United States🇺🇸

Its not pressed on 180 g, which is a bummer. As for the sound quality, don’t waste your time. Just grab a clean original pressing, you’ll have a much better experience.
