Product description

This is a 1980 Reissue released as a LP.

Dive into the vibrant world of jazz with Thelonious Monk's "Criss-Cross," a studio album that captures the essence of the genre's evolution in the early 1960s. Released by Columbia Records in August 1963, this album is a testament to Monk's innovative spirit and his ability to blend bebop, hard bop, and cool jazz into a cohesive and captivating soundscape.

"Criss-Cross" is Thelonious Monk's second album for Columbia Records, following the success of "Monk's Dream." Recorded over three consecutive afternoons from February 25 to 27, 1963, the album features a stellar lineup of musicians, including Charlie Rouse on saxophone, Frankie Dunlop on drums, and John Ore on bass. Thelonious Monk himself takes the helm on piano, delivering performances that are as technically impressive as they are emotionally resonant.

The album's tracklist is a journey through Monk's musical prowess, with standout tracks like "Hackensack," "Tea for Two," and the title track "Criss-Cross." Each song showcases Monk's unique compositional style and his ability to create intricate melodies that are both challenging and accessible. The album's duration of 43 minutes and 10 seconds ensures that listeners are treated to a comprehensive exploration of Monk's musical genius.

"Criss-Cross" is not just an album; it's a snapshot of a pivotal moment in jazz history. Thelonious Monk's innovative approach to composition and his ability to push the boundaries of the genre make this album a timeless classic. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "Criss-Cross" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience that highlights the enduring appeal of Thelonious Monk's music.

  • Monk's Joyful Jazz Mastery

    5 out of 5 stars
    mumiHZ_November 15, 2025United States🇺🇸

Monk truly shone when playing alongside his longtime partner Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, with bass and drums rounding out the group. This album is a fantastic showcase of Monk's ingenuity, clever songwriting, and the sheer joy he brought to his performances. Standout tracks include "Rhythm-A-Ning", "Hackensack", and "Criss Cross". Rouse often mirrors the melody at the top of his range, which can sometimes make the tuning a bit loose, but it gives the band a unique, expansive sound that you wouldn't trade for anything. This mid-70s reissue is spotless, with excellent clarity, dynamics, and a great stereo image. I can't think of any improvements that could be made to this pressing. If you come across it, don't hesitate to snag a copy. 5 stars, highly recommended.

  • Affordable Analog Warmth Triumph

I must say, I'm over the moon that I stumbled upon this Pure Pleasure pressing for just $20, as I've been on the hunt for a great sounding version of this album for ages. Unlike some of their other releases that come straight from the analogue tapes, this one's sourced from a hi-res DSD master that was mastered in the UK from those same tapes, but trust me, it doesn't skimp on that warm, analogue feel one bit. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from me!

The audio quality is absolutely amazing...The dynamics, sound stage, and detail are on par with a Tone Poets.

  • Monk's Dream Remastered

To me, this album's tracks are as good as or even surpass those on Monk’s Dream. The remaster sounds fantastic!

  • Outstanding Silent Dynamic Release

Incredible new release. Dead silent and super dynamic. Just what you'd anticipate from Bernie Grundman and Pallas. But most importantly, the music is truly outstanding.

About Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk, born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was a pioneering American jazz pianist and composer, renowned for his distinctive improvisational style and significant contributions to the jazz canon. As one of the founders of modern jazz, Monk's unique approach to rhythm, space, and harmony set him apart, making him the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. His compositions, such as "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", and "Straight, No Chaser", are staples of the genre. Mon... Read more
