Initially, this album might come across as bare-bones, worn-in, and quite minimal ... but remember, this is the artist behind “The Weary Kind,” a track that earned rock and country praise when featured in Crazy Heart. However, upon a second listen, you'll discover rowdy, Texas Tornado-inspired tracks nestled alongside songs like “Top Shelf Drugs,” a tune oozing with bold confidence, instantly evoking the country swagger of The Rolling Stones. Bingham stands as one of the modern artists rescuing country music from its current state ... pointless, meaningless, thematically weak, overproduced, modulated, and auto-tuned to excess. At the very least, Ryan's pursuit of artistic liberty led him to leave behind not only his major label Lost Highway but also his band Dead Horses, making him accountable for every aspect. This results in Leaving Fear and Saturday Night being arguably his most impressive and consistent work to date. Bingham demonstrates the potential of Americana music; he's a man with country roots but rock n' roll in his soul, blending the two with Dylan-esque lyrics in a way that makes each Ryan Bingham release feel like a debut. You'll find plenty here to nourish your spirit, and that's quite an achievement for someone who dislikes studios ... retreating to the California mountains, holed up in an Airstream trailer and off the grid, to craft these intimate stories and reflections.
