  • US Vinyl Release Quality

At the moment, Discogs only has one vinyl listing for this album, but the labels on my US-bought copy state "Made in the USA," so it's probably best to add a separate US release. Given its resemblance to "Live in Stuttgart," this might be another GZ pressing, albeit on marbled gold vinyl that's a tad noisy, as expected. Apart from that, the dynamics are fantastic, and it's certainly a solid pressing.

  • CAN's Live Magic

    5 out of 5 stars
    zeipnliksJanuary 26, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Like countless others, I've been a devoted follower of early CAN, but after Damo's departure, their studio work lost its way. However, their live performances were a different story entirely. Even when Holger shifted from bass to tapes and electronics, which was ahead of its time and featured early sampling, you could still find incredible performances. This particular concert is fascinating, especially when compared to their 1975 Stuttgart gig. The two shows are completely different sets. Here, you'll hear snippets of songs, whereas the Stuttgart show was even more improvised. The sound quality on this recording is excellent—it doesn't sound like a bootleg at all. I think they did an outstanding job restoring it. It's worth it for Jaki's drumming alone; the whole band seemed inspired. It was an amazing and dynamic gig with Jaki absolutely exploding at times. Jaki has been my favorite drummer since I first heard him around the age of 13. He captivated me instantly, as did the whole band. "Monster Movie" was my introduction to them, and hearing it at such a young age gave me the most intense musical experience of my life, sparking a lifelong love. Jaki was a shaman, a magician—at once robotic and organic. Praise to the unknown person who told him to play monotonous and repetitive around 1968, which seemed to have a profound impact on him as he followed the "instruction." He was ahead of his time, playing funky breakbeats that fit modern styles. Dinger from NEU was the other German drummer who brought something new to the world—the famous motoric beat, which Jaki also played on parts of "Mushroom." CAN gigs were adventures; some failed, but most were magical. Most concerts today are quite boring in comparison. On a Coldplay tour, there are no significant differences between the shows—they play to pre-recorded music on a laptop, everything is safe, no chances. That's fine; people like it. This is great, and I hope there will be more concerts from the early days with Damo or Malcolm. It's a shame they never made a proper live album back then, isn't it?

Outstanding son and perfect capture of the band's on-stage improvisation. A must-have to complete the studio albums.

What a feat to remaster a fan-recorded show and make it sound this good! This particular bootlegger clearly knew his stuff, using quality mics and positioning himself perfectly to capture the hall's acoustics. The pressing is superb, with a stunning sound that transports you straight to the concert. The bass is crisp yet punchy, adding a richness that only the finest bootlegs possess. It's an incredible performance, so far ahead of its time that the otherworldly sounds still pack a punch and feel remarkably current. I'm deducting a star for the somewhat cheap-looking artwork and liner notes...I believe this release deserved artwork as outstanding as its content.
