This album's got a great blend of tunes. It's got some gritty blues tracks, then suddenly it's all about that old-school swing, bringing back memories of Bing Crosby. I'm really digging it, it's full of life and energy. The old-timer really outdid himself this time 😀
Beautiful gatefold vinyl record with printed inner sleeves. It sounds fantastic and the album itself is one of Dylan's best from his later years. One of my most treasured records.
Bob keeps his winning streak alive in the 21st Century with 'Modern Times', much like 'Love & Theft', two of his all-time best albums in my humble opinion. The LP's mastering sounds fantastic & the heavyweight vinyl is completely noise-free.
This vinyl is spotless, hushed, and perfectly flat. The audio is incredibly rich and has a wonderful depth to it. It's an outstanding pressing.
Bob has taken us on another journey here, and I'm absolutely loving the ride. This feels like the first album he's ever recorded with the intention of performing it live. Bob has always been deeply immersed in his work, that's just his way. Sure, he collaborates with others, but the songs are always distinctly Dylan, start to finish. But now, at this stage of his life, with his arthritis keeping him at the piano instead of his guitar, he seems to have truly embraced the idea of a group effort. Most of the musicians on this record are now touring with him. They have a deep understanding of the music, having been there from the start and witnessing Dylan's creative process. You'd have to go all the way back to 'Highway 61' to find anything similar, and even then, Bob would work things out alone. This release is incredibly strong, and even more so live. It's a fantastic blend of Blues and Rock, a unique mix Dylan has crafted and shared with us. I keep coming back to it, again and again. How one man can continue to create such perfect music, develop new styles, and keep going is beyond me, but he's done it again. The album has some seriously rocking edges, and his voice is blazing with fire. He's found his sweet spot and is making the most of it. Bob is on solid ground here and is a force to be reckoned with once again. I can't imagine other artists not feeling challenged by a new Dylan album. With this release, the music seems to interest Bob more than the lyrics, not that the lyrics aren't top-notch because they are. It's just that there's a clear effort to extend the songs, almost to the point of jams, which is exactly what happens during the show. That's why I feel this album is more of a script for his live performance rather than a standalone album. But however you see it, you're going to love this release by the greatest artist of all time. That's right, THE GREATEST. The personal note...I was seeing this guy, let's call him Jeff. Now Jeff was a really cool DJ back in the days of heady radio, a concert promoter and producer. He asked me if I'd like to go see the Dylan show with him and mentioned something casually about backstage passes for after the show. Well sure, I was in without hesitation. As we're walking into the hall, Jeff lays down the Backstage Ground Rules, which went like this: 1. Any [when you go back stage for the party, they give everyone a ‘Goodie Bag’] items that are not duplicated in both bags Jeff got to keep. That was it, just the one rule, I could live with that. We were right up front and center, the show was perfect, and now we were headed backstage to see the living legend himself. WHAT? Bob wasn’t there, none of the band were there, no one we would remotely know was there, no interview to be had by Jeff...and me, I got a Tee Shirt and a memory that didn’t happen. A side note you might enjoy...May 3, 2007, KINDERGARTEN kids in ritzy L.A. suburb Calabasas have been coming home to their parents and talking about the "weird man" who keeps coming to their class to sing "scary" songs on his guitar. The "weird" one turns out to be Bob Dylan, whose grandson (Jakob Dylan's son) attends the school. He's been singing to the kindergarten class just for fun, but the kiddies have no idea they're being serenaded by a musical legend...to them, he's just Weird Guitar Guy.
