Product description

This is a 2014 Limited Edition Reissue released as a LP.

Hank Mobley's 1960 masterpiece, Roll Call, is a seminal work in the hard bop genre, showcasing the tenor saxophonist's unique talent and style. This iconic album, released on Blue Note Records, features a stellar lineup of musicians, including trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Blakey. The result is a rich and textured sound that adds depth and variety to Mobley's already impressive discography.

As part of a trilogy of hard bop classics, alongside Soul Station and Workout, Roll Call demonstrates Mobley's incredible skill and artistry during this period. The album's seven tracks, including the title track 'Roll Call' and 'The More I See You', showcase the band's ability to blend complex melodies and harmonies with a deep understanding of jazz tradition.

With a duration of 52 minutes, Roll Call is an album that will keep you engaged from start to finish. The addition of Freddie Hubbard's trumpet playing brings a new dimension to the music, complementing Mobley's saxophone perfectly. The rhythm section, comprising Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Art Blakey, provides a solid foundation for the band's explorations, resulting in a truly unforgettable listening experience.

Roll Call is a testament to Hank Mobley's innovative spirit and his contribution to the jazz genre. This classic album has been reissued as part of Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series, introducing its timeless music to a new generation of fans. With its unique blend of hard bop, jazz, bebop, and cool jazz elements, Roll Call is an essential addition to any jazz collection, and a must-listen for fans of Hank Mobley and the genre as a whole.

  • Blue Note Perfection

    5 out of 5 stars
    KqossecxadJanuary 2, 2026United States🇺🇸

★★★★★ (5/5) This is a fantastic pressing and a prime example of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series executed perfectly. My copy is utterly flat, plays with minimal noise, and is practically free from any clicks or pops. The surface noise is barely there, letting the music shine. Sound-wise, this pressing offers a vast soundstage with that classic hard left/right panning you'd expect from early 1960s Rudy Van Gelder stereo recordings, yet the imaging stays intact and captivating, not disjointed. The instruments sound incredible throughout. Hank Mobley’s tenor sax has a rich, warm tone, Freddie Hubbard’s trumpet cuts through with clarity and punch without being harsh, and the rhythm section sits just behind the horns, giving it that intimate small-club feel. The bass is deep and well-defined, piano and drums are crisp and well-balanced, and the dynamics are lively and engaging. I’ve come across some user reports mentioning distortion or pressing problems, but I haven’t noticed any distortion on my copy. Maybe I just got a great pressing, but in my setup, this record sounds clean, open, and natural from beginning to end. Based on my experience, this is a superb modern reissue and a must-have for anyone wanting to own Roll Call without hunting down a pricey original.

  • Distorted Disappointment

I don't get the glowing reviews. The sound is indeed better than my Scorpio Repress BUT my copy had tons of distortion (Tracks A2&A3). Returning it to the seller.

About Hank Mobley

Hank Mobley, the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone," carved out a unique niche in the jazz world with his laid-back, melodic style that perfectly embodied the hard bop genre. Born in Eastman, Georgia, Mobley's smooth and soulful sound stood out amidst the more aggressive tones of his contemporaries like John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. His compositions, such as "Soul Station" and "Dig Dis," are staples of the hard bop canon, and his extensive work with Blue Note Records from the 1950... Read more
