Product description

This 2023 Reissue LP is pressed on Red vinyl.

Ornette Coleman's "The Shape of Jazz To Come," released in 1959, is a groundbreaking album that redefined the landscape of jazz. As Ornette Coleman's third album and his debut on Atlantic Records, it marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of avant-garde jazz. Recorded in a single day on May 22, 1959, at Radio Recorders in Los Angeles, this album features the innovative quartet of Ornette Coleman on alto saxophone, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Percy Heath on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. The six tracks, including "Lonely Woman" and "Peace," are characterized by their lack of traditional chord structures, showcasing Coleman's revolutionary approach to jazz composition and improvisation. This album, released just months after Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue," is celebrated for its profound impact on the genre, steering jazz into uncharted territories and solidifying Ornette Coleman's status as a visionary in the world of music.

Funny thing, the one I just got has this hype sticker and my record is black. It’s my fav color though. All good, just wondering

  • Remastered Album Impressive

    5 out of 5 stars
    bcuhrgqizsajDecember 17, 2025United States🇺🇸

Wow, this album is absolutely fantastic! I've only ever owned a low-quality sounding pressing before this one. From what I understand, they remastered it using the original tapes? I might have reduced the high end just a bit, then it would be flawless. My copy has a few minor pops and ticks after giving it an ultrasonic clean. It appears there's no way to distinguish that it's the Speaker's Corner version except for the sticker on the front.

  • VMP Version Wins

Outstanding mastering and pressing throughout. I absolutely adored this one and it was my top pick for a long time. But I gotta admit, I lean a bit more towards the VMP version. It's all about the packaging for me, plus Ryan's mix and the mono sound—that's the copy I keep reaching for over this Kevin Gray cut. I even gave this reissue away 'cause it just wasn't getting any playtime when the VMP was right there beside it. It's totally a matter of personal taste. You can't go wrong with either one.

  • Top-Notch Tunes and Quality

    5 out of 5 stars
    xellqjusOctober 27, 2025United States🇺🇸

The tunes on this one are truly top-notch, no doubt about it. The sound quality is phenomenal, with rem rei that's absolutely superb. The pressing is excellent, flat as a pancake and practically noise-free. The gatefold cover is sturdy and well-made. It's hard to ask for more than this. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's into this particular style.
