Product description

This 2024 Limited Edition Reissue 2LP set is pressed on Gold vinyl.

"These People" is the fourth studio album from Richard Ashcroft, the acclaimed British singer and musician known for his work as the frontman of The Verve. Released on May 20, 2016, under the Righteous Phonographic Association label, this album marks a significant return for Ashcroft after a six-year hiatus. With a blend of Britpop and Madchester influences, "These People" is a vibrant and introspective collection of ten tracks that showcase Ashcroft's signature style and lyrical depth.

The album opens with "Out of My Body," setting the tone for a journey through themes of self-discovery and resilience. Tracks like "This Is How It Feels" and "They Don't Own Me" highlight Ashcroft's ability to craft anthemic, emotionally charged songs that resonate with listeners. The album's title track, "These People," is a standout, featuring powerful vocals and a driving rhythm that encapsulates the album's spirit.

"These People" received critical acclaim and became a fan favorite, reaching number three on the Official UK Albums Chart. The album's production is rich and layered, with orchestral elements and bumper-sticker mantras that add to its unique sound. Songs like "Everybody Needs Somebody to Hurt" and "Picture of You" delve into personal struggles and relationships, while "Black Lines" and "Ain't the Future So Bright" offer a mix of introspection and hope.

With a duration of 51 minutes, "These People" is a testament to Richard Ashcroft's enduring talent and his ability to create music that is both timeless and relevant. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to his work, this album is a compelling addition to his discography, showcasing his growth as an artist and his unwavering commitment to his craft.

Without a doubt These People will musically thrill many, it’s romantically lush streaming orchestrated rock at it’s very best. Yet just below the surface a hallowed more sinister side blossoms, one showing a churning maelstrom of death, two faced politicians, riots and revolution, all ebbed on by a media that corners the edges in order to manipulate the masses. It would be far too easy to say that it’s nearly a relief to hear Richard belaying such truths, as if the left winged intellectual folk rock world had taken a huge step into the future, railing against the same old walls, unable to be compliant. That said, the album has a very homespun feel, and why shouldn’t it, the whole assemblage was recorded in Ashcroft’s basement studio, designed to feel compelling comfortable and engaging all within the same breath … dare I say, a deceptively seditious listen. These People is an under the radar record, one filled with bewilderment and anger for the current state of the world and our society. All of this has been done before, though I’d not expected Richard Ashcroft to devote an entire thematically formed finger pointing album at the injustices surrounding all of us.Once realized, it’s impossible to simply be enchanted by the music, it’s a sermon with songs that are not commercially viable, hanging out there treacherously, making for one or two good listens only, before its tragedy is shelved, like some book of dark magic, never to be played again for fear that the songs would become too real, too overwhelming, too unabashedly demanding … and in the end, far too urgent and ambitiously tragic for easy consumption. On a side note, the entire record has a plastic preordained electronic feel to it, as if it lacks a soul or the ability to invite you in. I welcome the day when Richard Ashcroft may find a more happiness and contentment, giving listeners a warm blanket of emotionally joyous stars to wrap themselves in. *** I've become very weary of these double single albums. Yes, I understand the sonic sound concept, yet I don't hear the difference, and I have the equipment to reveal it. Just give me a well pressed record I don't need to jump up and flip over every two songs.Review by Jenell Kesler
