Product description

This 2023 Reissue LP is housed in a gatefold, pressed on 180g vinyl.

Dive into the world of jazz with McCoy Tyner's "Time For Tyner," a captivating album that showcases the pianist's mastery and innovative spirit. Released in August 1969 on the prestigious Blue Note Records, this album is Tyner's ninth studio effort and his third with the label, following the critically acclaimed "Expansions." Recorded in May 1968 at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, "Time For Tyner" is a testament to Tyner's unique voice in the jazz landscape.

The album features a stellar quartet, with McCoy Tyner at the helm, accompanied by the virtuosic vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Freddie Waits. This horn-less session allows the interplay between Tyner's piano and Hutcherson's vibraphone to take center stage, resulting in a fast-paced and intricate musical dialogue.

"Time For Tyner" spans a variety of jazz genres, including hard bop, cool jazz, bebop, and free jazz, demonstrating Tyner's versatility and boundary-pushing approach. The album opens with the reimagined "African Village," followed by the lively "Little Madimba," and the cool and collected "May Street." Tyner also pays homage to the Great American Songbook with his interpretations of "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top," and "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face."

With a runtime of 42 minutes, "Time For Tyner" is a concise yet powerful exploration of McCoy Tyner's artistry. The album's remastered 2003 Rudy Van Gelder Edition ensures that the original recording's warmth and clarity are preserved, allowing new and veteran fans alike to appreciate the timeless quality of Tyner's music. Whether you're a longtime admirer of McCoy Tyner or a curious jazz enthusiast, "Time For Tyner" is an essential addition to your collection, offering a unique perspective on the pianist's evolution and his enduring impact on the jazz genre.

  • Replacement Has Minor Flaws

    3 out of 5 stars
    Hafloy_YSeptember 21, 2025United States🇺🇸

I had to swap out my initial copy as well. It was bent and had a scratch. The replacement also has some minor scratches, but they're not very noticeable. The track numbers on the B-Side aren't in order.

  • Tone Poet Triumphs

    5 out of 5 stars

I've got this release and also the McCoy Tyner - Time For Tyner DMM from '86. Don't get me wrong, the older one's got a great sound, but the Tone Poet version? It's got way more detail and it's just plain better. The dynamics are about the same, though. A few people mentioned that weird sound stage where the piano and vibraphone seem to be stacked on top of each other, and the left channel's pretty quiet. Yeah, that's still a thing with the Tone Poet disc, but you can actually tell the instruments apart when they're playing together, which was a real struggle with the earlier versions. Honestly, I don't think this recording was RVG's best work. But the mastering quality and the perfect pressing? They're right up there with every other Tone Poet release I've had the pleasure of listening to.

  • Disappointing Tone Poet Release

    5 out of 5 stars
    tuigxocxvMay 29, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm afraid this one doesn't meet the usual Tone Poet series quality, it's dull and uninspiring, lacks punch, if this is what's coming, I'll have to skip it.

  • Subdued but Brilliant Album

    4 out of 5 stars
    FecufyyeApril 19, 2025United States🇺🇸

This is a fantastic album; however, I'm having trouble identifying the specific pressing. It's quite subdued and lacks depth - the audio is a tad too gentle & the instruments seem to blend into one another. I wouldn't be shocked if some people decide to skip this one. Regardless, the music itself is incredibly good 😊 …

  • Label Colors Vary

I own a version of this pressing. Side one has a white 'B' logo, and side two has a black 'B' logo. The blue labels are in different hues.
