Upon its release, this album was universally disliked, but honestly, it's not as bad as everyone says. It's quite a pop-focused record, lacking any funky or R'n'Beezy elements. You'll find a mix of styles here, from the art rock and slightly silly tracks in the middle like "Zeroes" and "Glass Spider," to the New Wave vibe of "Shining Star," which is otherwise quite forgettable. There's also "New York's in Love," which has a semi-alternative, almost Psychedelic Furs-like sound, and a trio of lukewarm yet ambitious pop-rock-and-roll tracks that wrap up the album. The opening track, "Day-In, Day-Out," is actually a fun dance-pop song and the best single from the album. You could argue it's more about style than substance, but it's no worse than "Let's Dance" in that regard. I think the artist was aiming high, trying to create an album that would translate well to a live concert experience. However, by the time it was released, it felt a bit behind the times and quickly became outdated.
Among his often-criticized 80s works, this one's a step up from 'Tonight'! 'Time Will Crawl' and the main track still hold up well, and it's great to hear Bowie revisit his experimental side on songs like 'Glass Spider'. Once again, an outstanding DB remaster for vinyl, and the pressing is incredibly quiet.
This album's pressing is genuinely fantastic, and I truly enjoy quite a few tracks here. Among Bowie's "Commercial Era" albums ('Let's Dance' to 'NLMD'), 'NLMD' stands out as my top pick. The songwriting is seriously impressive, even if the production feels a tad dated (the dreaded drum machine sounds like a gunshot to the ears, and 'Glass Spider' musically just doesn't click for me—I think it's too rushed). Fortunately, if the production isn't your cup of tea, there's another version out there, 'NLMD 2018', with a more modern production and no drum machine in sight. I personally dig both (but if I had to choose for 'Glass Spider', I'd go with the 2018 version as it reminds me of an outtake from my all-time fave Bowie album, 'Outside').
Excellent quality pressing. The sky blue vinyl looks amazing and the audio has a fantastic dynamic range.
In my opinion, this David Bowie album from '87 is quite good. While some folks might argue that this, along with "Let's Dance" and "Tonight," is a bit too commercial, I believe it's fitting for the time and sounds great. The Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) really shines here.
