Right now, you can grab it straight from the David Bowie Official Store in the US or Warner Canada. If you're up in Canada, GO WITH WARNER. Bringing it in from the DB store will hit your wallet harder, since they don't do deals like free shipping up here, and the CAD to USD exchange rate isn't great at the moment. Plus, I've been stung before with customs fees, even when I pre-paid them.
It seemed like a strange choice to put out two live albums from '95 with nearly identical setlists, but in reality, the arrangements and atmosphere are quite distinct, plus we get tracks that were left off the Dallas CD: "Scary Monsters" and "Spaceboy." But hey, this is Bowie at his artistic peak, playing with his best band since the "Station to Station" days—Carlos Alomar is still with him, thankfully, and the crowd goes wild when he's introduced. This time around, we're treated to "Strangers When We Meet," "The Motel," "Jump They Say," and "Moonage Daydream" instead of "Nite Flights," "Joe the Lion," and "Andy Warhol." The way the label handled this release and the Dallas one was a total mess and pretty shady, but the music? Absolutely perfect.
I've just gotten what I believe is a 2022 reissue of this set from the Warner Records Canada web store. The pressing quality is solid, with no hiss, though disc one isn't perfectly centered (my old Dual turntable doesn't seem to care). This was taped by the BBC for partial airplay, and luckily, by the mid-'90s, that meant they made a proper master of the entire performance. A couple of tracks also turned up as B-sides on "Hallo Spaceboy" singles. The sound on this record is massive and resonant, likely designed to capture the live feel of Outside, both in concert and on vinyl. On a personal note: I felt then, and still do, that Outside marked David Bowie's incredible creative comeback after a decade of dormancy. It was thrilling to listen to back then, and it's still exhilarating today. I'm over the moon to have an official release (or two!) of the tour I regrettably missed.
Top-notch press and audio quality. Great selection of Bowie tracks, even featuring a seldom-heard performance of Jump They Say.
Awesome press, awesome show, I truly enjoy it. Perhaps the mix might have been a bit better for the guitars, but it's about personal preference.
