Optimal has done a fantastic job with this release. The vinyl is incredibly thick and plays smoothly with minimal noise.

  • Half-Baked Davis Revival

    3 out of 5 stars
    vuriucfaes8 April 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

This album was supposed to give us a taste of the artist's original vision, but honestly, it's quite underwhelming and feels a bit empty. It seems like the project wasn't developed enough when the team took it on, which is a shame. Originally, they planned to collaborate with Prince and some hip hop artists, but none of that happened back then. The team that worked on it 35 years later did their best with what they had, but there's just not enough of Davis' original input to make it more than just a novelty. Don't get me wrong, there are some incredible performances, vocals, and production here, but it's all trying to prop up an album that's only half-baked. The packaging is really nice, though, and the sound is solid, even if it's a bit too trebly at times (maybe to suit modern tastes?). The vinyl is high-quality and quiet, with short sides that help prevent distortion. This one's probably best for die-hard Miles Davis fans. Newer listeners should probably start with his official 80s and 90s work like Tutu, Aura, and Doo-Bop to get a feel for what he was doing in his later years. Focus on Miles' playing to catch the bits of his original inspiration that made it onto this record.
