Swans have always been, still are, and always will be utterly untouchable. Their sound is massive. Just caught their grand farewell tour. They're the greatest band out there, nothing even compares.
Like all of Swans' 2-hour albums, this one's best enjoyed on CD. My luck with YGR's pressings has been pretty good overall, but it seems like a fair number of their 3LP releases have at least one warped record. (I've got a copy of To Be Kind that could double as a bowl...) So, it's something to think about if you're trying to decide between formats. Especially since it seems like this is the worst it's been based on other reviews. That said, and despite the hassle of paper sleeves, it's worth every penny. The sound quality's right up there with their other stuff. Maybe my favorite since The Glowing Man.
Following up on "The Beggar," Swans keep up their impressive streak with another mighty album. I wouldn't settle for anything less. Absolutely album of the year stuff. It's a bummer that some folks got messed up records, but mine came in perfect and scratch-less. The inner sleeves could've been better for the price, though.
This album is truly fantastic and might just bring a tear to your eye, knowing it's the final record from this Swans lineup. On the other hand, it's not just a dignified goodbye, but an outright phenomenal one. It's an outstanding recording that, surprisingly (yes, surprisingly because Swans' albums usually deserve a top-notch sound), sounds great on vinyl. The record's melancholic vibe contrasts with its intimate outbursts. 'Birthing' is an album about the loss of my dad. That's how I connect with this music.
