In certain aspects, this album carries a somewhat mystical and dark atmosphere. It truly captures the essence of a band navigating a rather somber phase. Yet, they're in incredible shape, churning out one masterpiece after another.
All time fav album, pure dark magic in every way
Mis-printed edition boasts pretty good audio & ultra-quiet vinyl. It's flawless from start to finish, ending with the unbeatable Wendell Gee, their most stunning track ever created.
In contrast to https://www.discogs.com/release/6329539-REM-Fables-Of-The-Reconstruction-Reconstruction-Of-The-Fables, the sound stage here feels a bit wider, with more emphasis on the bass and kick drum. The vocals are a tad less prominent, but that's likely due to the original recording's murkiness, which actually adds to its Southern Gothic charm. The jangly guitars still stand out a lot. As a drummer, I really dig the extra attention given to the rhythm section in this mix. And hey, don't forget the pops on my original copy!
Excellent pressing, mastered by Jack Skinner over at Sterling Sound. Adore the cover's texture and the inner sleeve's multi-font design, which gives off that vintage catalog vibe.
