Fantastic pressing. The audio quality is superb. I don't own the first pressing, but I highly doubt it could sound any better than this one.
I didn't notice any of the distortion or poor sound quality that the previous reviewer mentioned. This album is absolutely fantastic. I picked up a sealed copy for around $11 from another seller and I'm really happy with it. Over the years, I've listened to original pressings of this album, and I still think this new 180-gram version is superior. A perfect 5-star album and a perfect 5-star release.
Audio seems a tad 'hollow'. There's a bit too much high-end and not enough low-end. Yet, the tunes are fantastic and the record's quality is top-notch.
Finding an early pressing of "Hotter Than Hell" that isn't all worn out is quite a challenge, since these albums were mostly owned and played by kids with cheap record players—counting myself among them. Consequently, I've had to replace most of my original KISS records. I decided to give this recent reissue a shot, and it sounds incredibly clean, revealing details I'd never noticed before. That being said, I suspect it's been slightly EQ'd, with a scooped midrange, emphasized bass, and crisp highs. I can't be certain without a side-by-side comparison, though. Either way, this copy sounds really good. It's a bit compressed, but the dynamics are still there. If you're unsure, just turn it up—it gets better as the volume increases. Standout tracks are "Let Me Go Rock And Roll", "Hotter Than Hell", and "Parasite". Listen to the drums on "Strange Ways"—they sound fantastic. The vinyl is super clean and quiet, and the outer sleeve is a great reproduction. 3.5 stars. Recommended.
