Product description

This LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

Dive into the rich, textured soundscapes of Wilco's tenth studio album, "Schmilco," released on September 9, 2016, under Legacy Recordings. This collection of 12 tracks, spanning a concise 36 minutes, is a testament to Wilco's enduring ability to blend alt-country, Americana, and indie rock into a cohesive and captivating whole. Frontman Jeff Tweedy's songwriting shines through, offering a mix of introspective lyrics and melodic hooks that are both poignant and accessible.

"Schmilco" opens with "Normal American Kids," setting the tone for an album that explores themes of identity, loss, and the search for meaning in everyday life. Tracks like "If I Ever Was a Child" and "Cry All Day" showcase Wilco's knack for blending raw emotion with sophisticated musical arrangements. The album's mid-section, featuring songs like "Common Sense" and "Nope," highlights the band's ability to craft memorable, radio-ready tunes without sacrificing depth or complexity.

The latter half of the album delves into more experimental territory, with tracks like "Locator" and "Shrug and Destroy" demonstrating Wilco's willingness to push musical boundaries. The album closes with "Just Say Goodbye," a poignant and reflective piece that leaves a lasting impression.

Recorded with a keen ear for detail and a commitment to musical excellence, "Schmilco" is a standout addition to Wilco's impressive discography. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to their music, this album offers a rewarding listening experience that showcases the band's unique sound and enduring appeal.

  • Enjoyable Album, More Guitar

I enjoy this album, though I wish there was more of that amazing Nels Cline guitar stuff. The vinyl is fantastic, super flat and hardly any noise.

  • Schmilco's Hidden Brilliance Unveiled

    5 out of 5 stars
    RubhrigaySeptember 13, 2025United States🇺🇸

Who could have imagined that the Wilco album receiving the least acclaim would turn out to be the most impactful? This pressing is remarkably quiet, boasting outstanding instrument separation that expands into a vast soundstage. Jeff's vocals are gently pushed back in the mix, while Nels, Pat, and Glenn take center stage — it's unique, but it absolutely works! And that bass… I never considered Schmilco to be a bass-forward record, but here it is, rich and prominent. I once thought this album was a chaotic jumble. Played through an Alexa speaker or a CD in the car, it can sound dull and lifeless. But in a treated room on vinyl, it blossoms in a way I've never encountered before. Subtle nuances emerge, hidden details come to life, and the entire album breathes with a clarity that redefines the record entirely. This pressing demonstrates that Schmilco isn’t the forgettable album some claimed it to be — it’s a powerful gem waiting for the right setup to unveil itself. Kudos to Bob and Chris for a fantastic job.

  • Warm Dark Gem

    5 out of 5 stars
    kagceiwAugust 16, 2025United States🇺🇸

This is one of the most sonically warm recordings I've come across. The album itself is a brilliant dark gem. It's their most stripped-down work to date, yet it still captures that thrilling sense of exploration found in their peak compositions.

  • Wilco's Schmilco: Hits and Misses

    3 out of 5 stars
    gfpuufmaisiFebruary 16, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Beware, Wilco is back with another album that you're either going to adore, despise, or, like this reviewer, you'll pick out the tracks that resonate with you and add them to your ever-expanding collection of Wilco gems. By gems, I mean that Wilco is one of those bands that releases a plethora of fantastic tracks, but they always seem to miss the mark when it comes to compiling a perfect album filled with undeniable hits. That said, I will say that all the material on Schmilco will sound incredible live, and that's where my issue with Jeff Tweedy and his band of musicians lies ... what I hear during a concert is not what I want to hear when I play a record on my turntable. Now, I'm more than certain that there are people out there who will sing this album's praises, giving it no less than five stars, and honestly, I'm glad those people exist, because without them, I would miss the four or five tracks from each album that excite me endlessly. Listening to the album, one can't help but feel torn, as Tweedy's efforts seem directed at a lot of people and things that annoy him, or that he can't quite grasp ... and I don't know about you, but I get tired of listening to my friends complain all the time, let alone buying an album that targets Jeff's gripes ... though, to be fair, he does seem to enjoy his share of neurotic, high-energy darkness. In every way, Schmilco is a direct continuation of Star Wars, and I for one would like to see the band focus on songs like “If Ever I Was A Child,” “Cry All Day,” and “We Aren't The World (Safety Girl),” tracks that showcase the band's natural talent for delivering pure, fuzzed-out alternative country at its finest. But that's just me, living on the outskirts of what Wilco deems fit to release, meaning that for the last twenty years and ten or so albums, I'm still selecting and choosing which Wilco songs I'm going to keep, and which ones I'm going to let collect dust.

  • Vinyl Edition Exceeds Expectations

    5 out of 5 stars
    dukuscqoox93January 26, 2025United States🇺🇸

I'm thrilled I opted for the black vinyl edition. It's got that lovely analog coziness that Star Wars was lacking a tad. The vinyl quality is absolutely top-tier.
