Masabumi Kikuchi
Masabumi Kikuchi, born in Tokyo in 1939, was a pioneering Japanese jazz pianist and composer celebrated for his distinctive and idiosyncratic playing style. His journey began in the rural landscapes of Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima, where he developed a deep appreciation for music, influenced by the American records he collected as a student. Kikuchi's career spanned decades and continents, with notable collaborations in both Japan and the United States. He worked with jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, and Gil Evans, and formed a long-standing musical partnership with drummer Paul Motian. His discography is vast and diverse, encompassing genres from post-bop and classical to fusion, reflecting his versatility and innovative spirit. Kikuchi's unique approach to the piano made him a beloved figure in the jazz community, leaving an indelible mark on the genre until his passing in 2015.
