  • Monk's Quartet Shines

    4 out of 5 stars
    Bruno JonesFebruary 15, 2025

Monk was an amazing artist, and there's a ton of his music out there, with lots of reissues too. I'm more into his piano stuff. Sure, you might be drawn to albums with famous sidemen like Coltrane, Rollins, Mulligan, or Miles. But honestly, on those records, the horn players are so loud that Monk's genius often gets overshadowed; it's not the best way to appreciate one of the all-time greats of bebop and hard bop. I've got his solo albums too, but they don't always have that edgy, mind-bending, modern Monk sound I love. A lot of those are more about his early stride piano style. This is a fantastic record with his quartet plus Thad Jones. Monk's longtime partner Charlie Rouse is on tenor. Charlie always knows just how to back up the piano. He's as great an accompanist as he is a soloist. As I said, this STEREO record sounds incredible. The horns have a great sound (though they're a bit drenched in reverb); the drums are a bit old-school, but not in a bad way.Very nice pressing, OJC usually hits the mark. Highly recommended.

This album is amazing. The sound is so clear, crisp, and well-balanced. Kevin Gray did an incredible job mastering it. It's a must-have, even for those who just casually enjoy Jazz. This album is already on fire and somehow keeps getting better.

Five by Monk by Five" is an amazing album to listen to! Kevin Gray did an incredible job mastering it, resulting in a sound that's warm, clear, and spacious. The performance throughout is outstanding. I strongly suggest giving it numerous plays!

  • Test Pressing Sound Quality

This test pressing has a really nice sound. I'm guessing it was meant for a Classic Records reissue but it never came to fruition. Any information would be great. Perhaps it was an Analogue Productions project?

Product description

This is a 2013 Reissue released as a LP.

"5 By Monk By 5" is a quintessential jazz album by the legendary Thelonious Monk, recorded in June 1959 and released later that year under the Riverside label. This album captures the essence of Monk's unique piano style, blending bebop, hard bop, and cool jazz into a cohesive and captivating collection of tracks. The quintet features Monk on piano, Thad Jones on cornet, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums, creating a dynamic and well-integrated unit that brings Monk's compositions to life.

The album includes five tracks, each showcasing Monk's innovative and idiosyncratic approach to jazz. "Jackie-ing," "Straight, No Chaser," "Played Twice," "I Mean You," and "Ask Me Now" are all standout pieces that highlight the band's chemistry and Monk's distinctive piano playing. "Straight, No Chaser" is a particular highlight, with its extended duration and intricate interplay between the musicians.

This album is a testament to Monk's enduring influence on jazz and his ability to create music that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply enjoyable. The 1959 sessions marked the first studio performance of Charlie Rouse with Thelonious Monk, adding a fresh dimension to Monk's sound. Whether you're a longtime fan of Monk or a newcomer to his music, "5 By Monk By 5" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The album has been reissued on clear vinyl, with a limited edition of only 500 copies, making it a sought-after addition to any jazz collection.

About Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk, born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was a pioneering American jazz pianist and composer, renowned for his distinctive improvisational style and significant contributions to the jazz canon. As one of the founders of modern jazz, Monk's unique approach to rhythm, space, and harmony set him apart, making him the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. His compositions, such as "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", and "Straight, No Chaser", are staples of the genre. Mon... Read more
