  • Pan-Africanist Anthems from L.A.

    4 out of 5 stars
    Marek SantosMay 9, 2024United States🇺🇸

This album is amazing because it's like hearing from a fellow L.A. local with a Pan-African perspective. Back in my teenage years, I'd walk past the Marcus Garvey prep school on my way to the bus stop at Crenshaw/Slauson, where I'd catch the bus to Santa Monica daily due to redlining - and this was in the early 2010's! "Afrika" is a powerful Pan-Africanist message to black separatists, encouraging them to keep pushing for their journey to better lands in the Motherland. After all these years admiring Nottz's beats, what he's done on "Afrika" is truly unique - he's incorporated vocal samples alongside the woodwinds and drums he's famous for. The only tape that comes close to this is the Africa tape in Madlib's "Beat Konducta" series, but with added lyrics. Madlib's another West Coast native, and we've got our own unique perspective on being born and raised in a European country out West. Albums like "Afrika" give us a solid viewpoint to understand the Black Sepratist movement.

Product description

This 2023 Limited Edition LP is pressed on Black vinyl.

"Afrik" by Blu and Nottz is a powerful and introspective journey into the rich history and culture of their ancestral homeland. Released on December 8, 2023, under the labels Nature Sounds and New World Color, this album is a celebration of African heritage, blending the genres of jazz rap and underground hip hop. With a runtime of 44 minutes, the album features 10 tracks, each offering a unique perspective on the African experience.

The album opens with "Kuwakaribisha (Welcome)" featuring G Kidd, setting the tone for the journey ahead. Blu's introspective lyrics and Nottz's thunderous beats create a compelling narrative that connects the struggles of Black people in the U.S. to those of African peoples worldwide. Tracks like "Jina Langu (My Name)" featuring Scienze and PCH, and "Mungu (God)" featuring Black Shakespeare, delve into personal and spiritual themes, while "Marcus Garvey" featuring Shad and Quelle Chris, pays homage to the iconic Pan-Africanist leader.

"Afrik" is not just a musical experience but a cultural one. The album's Swahili song titles and the collaboration with a diverse range of artists, including Tristate, Johaz, and Shafiq Husayn, among others, add layers of depth and authenticity. Whether you're a longtime fan of Blu and Nottz or new to their work, "Afrik" offers a profound exploration of identity, heritage, and the universal human experience.
