This is a fantastic pressing with beautiful music. But, the double bass has some kind of distortion issue. It's noticeable when the bass plays alone, like on track B2. There's a hissing sound whenever bass notes are hit.
Fantastic sounding album! But „Limited Edition 1000 copies“ and 1,100 discogs users own this…? ;-)
The 10" box has that old-school look, and the audio really takes you back to the studio days. I'm thrilled to own this version.
As per my latest bank statement, I'm penniless, but I just couldn't resist buying this three-10" vinyl set of Miles Davis' masterpiece "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud." The Louis Malle film is brilliant, naturally, but the soundtrack is a series of flawless musical moments. With outstanding support from French jazz musicians Pierre Michelot, René Urtreger, Barney Wilen, and the legendary American drummer Kenny Clarke. The atmosphere is steady, with hints of melancholy and introspection. The quintessential 'Modal' sounding album, it evokes the sound of a moody ocean or the dampness on a Parisian sidewalk. I own at least four versions of this soundtrack album. It's frequently reissued in various formats, but my favorite is the 10" record. Last year, they released a 10" original version, but this package includes all the outtakes across three discs. For new listeners, I'd recommend this package because it sounds incredible, and there isn't a single bad or wasted track, including the extra bonus cuts. You can find a cheaper version, but why would you want to skimp on vinyl excellence? The album works perfectly in the early morning as well as late at night. It has a purity or a sense of place that is meditative, but not background music. Picking a favorite Miles album is nearly impossible, given his extensive recorded history. However, on a very personal level, this is my favorite Miles album. It never fails to provide me with the sustenance I need to keep going, and although I don't feel it's a spiritual work, perhaps more of a sensual experience. Sensuality is at the forefront, making it the ultimate sound of lovemaking that enters the brain.
Unlike my initial buy from Sam Records, Afternoon In Paris, this 10" record has me completely hooked. The sound is much more spacious and open, likely due to the use of original tapes or perhaps just better recording. It boasts excellent dynamics and clarity, and unlike the previous album that clearly sounded mono, this one tricked me into thinking it was stereo when it's not. What else is there to say? The cover art is undoubtedly well-done, and I appreciate the effort to replicate the original. However, I'd prefer a standard 12" as this one fits awkwardly on my shelf. I wonder if the smaller size affected some aspects of the mastering, like the bass, even though it already has good bass. The pressing is nice, but there's a strange noise on the deeper bass notes of B2. I'm not sure what causes it, but it might just be tape-related.
