Wow, what a killer release! Shelter press nailed it with this one. The sound quality is top-notch, done by some real pros.
Boasting nearly 25 years in the industry and over 100 releases, Sissy Spacek has carved out a unique sonic identity. Their music spans noise, grindcore, musique concrète, punk, and field recordings, always pushing boundaries with a distinct character. Wiese, too, is a virtuoso, paying meticulous attention to minute details and sounds, making this album a captivating experience with each listen. The four sides of this record lean heavily into the musique concrète realm, occasionally featuring muted blastbeats and moments of feedback and noise, but these are not the central focus. The editing on this record is superb, with sounds ebbing and flowing as in much of Wiese’s work, but this time they carry an eerie quality (side B is a stellar example of sustaining tension and release without the typical explosive climax). I’d advise listening to this record with headphones, as the panning effects are so well-executed they can be disorienting, and the pressing quality is excellent, avoiding the distracting clicks and pops that plague many releases these days. While noise records often overlook sound quality, it’s a treat to have pristine audio when the mix and mastering are as impeccable as they are here. The cover is also noteworthy, featuring thick cardboard and a gatefold design, fitting for a double LP. One of the standout releases of 2025.
