  • Bass-Focused Vinyl Gem

Fantastic album! It's all focused on the bass, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it's captured on the vinyl. It'd be nice to have another US pressing, though – mine is correctly printed (45rpm instead of 33rpm).

  • Vinyl Noise Issue

    4 out of 5 stars
    Xuafw78April 28, 2024United States🇺🇸

This 2 LP set is quite nice, weighing in at 180 grams and being flat, BUT it's marred by surface noise, likely caused by the inexpensive white inner sleeves that came with it. I gave the LPs a good cleaning before playing and switched them to MoFi-style inner sleeves. No improvement…still plenty of snap, crackle, and pop. The soundstage is actually pretty decent, but you can't overlook the vinyl's surface noise. The gatefold is nice, but unlike other recent Blue Note Records releases, the lack of proper sleeves contributes to the surface noise. Here's hoping future Marcus Miller vinyl releases have better quality control.

Product description

This 2024 Limited Edition Reissue 2LP set is pressed on White vinyl.

Marcus Miller's highly-anticipated album, Laid Black, is a masterful blend of jazz fusion, funk, and urban music, showcasing the renowned bassist's signature sound. Released on June 1, 2018, via Blue Note Records, this vibrant album features an impressive array of collaborations with esteemed artists, including Trombone Shorty, Jonathan Butler, Take 6, Selah Sue, Kirk Whalum, and Alex Han.

With Laid Black, Miller brings a fresh perspective to his trademark style, incorporating modern urban influences while maintaining the strong, straightforward grooves that have become a hallmark of his music. The album's 10 tracks, including the tour de force "Trip Trap" and the scorching "Untamed", demonstrate Miller's virtuosic electric bass playing, with its distinctive metallic-yet-warm tone taking centre stage throughout.

From the energetic opening notes to the final fade-out, Laid Black is a testament to Miller's boundless creativity and skill. The album's eclectic mix of styles and guest appearances makes for a compelling listen, with each track offering a unique sonic experience. Whether it's the infectious funk of "7-T's" or the soulful introspection of "Someone To Love", Miller's music is sure to captivate and inspire.

Nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, Laid Black is a must-listen for fans of jazz, funk, and beyond. With its genre-defying sound and exceptional musicianship, this album solidifies Marcus Miller's position as one of the most innovative and respected artists in the music world.
