  • Vinyl's Golden Age

    5 out of 5 stars
    EMESRIXDLBENovember 16, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is an absolute masterpiece from one of Germany's finest electronic music producers. The special edition boasts a gorgeous clear magenta hue and is pressed to perfection, with outstanding vinyl mastering. On a high-end audiophile system—featuring a tube preamp and amplifier, a top-tier turntable, and exceptional speakers—this album sounds incredible, offering a remarkably expansive soundstage and superb dynamics. The pressing is whisper quiet, a testament to how far colored vinyl has come. I recall a time when colored vinyl was inconsistent, and black vinyl was the only reliable choice for quality pressings. But those days are long gone. We’ve truly entered a golden age of colored vinyl. Of the records I’ve acquired from late 2023 onward, about three-quarters of them are colored. The designs have become increasingly intricate, with marbled, splatter, and even glitter-infused vinyl, along with special features like etchings, glow-in-the-dark effects, and zoetrope patterns. This trend shows no signs of slowing down, and vinyl doesn’t even need the extra appeal—it’s already more popular than ever. For successful Millennials (my generation), a wall of records is a status symbol, and I’m sure it’s not just us. Vinyl editions sell out instantly and have become a fantastic investment. Back when I was DJing through college and grad school, I spent every spare dollar on records. My parents, friends, and even a few girlfriends tried to convince me it was a waste—especially after music went digital. But here we are in 2025, with nearly every recording available to stream instantly in lossless quality, and vinyl is at its peak. My record collection? It’s worth nearly ten times what I paid for it. I’ve always taken meticulous care of my records, using archival rice paper inner sleeves and thick plastic outer protectors, so most are in Ex++ to NM condition. The covers are in similar shape, and even the records I DJ’d with are still in excellent condition (though I usually bought two copies of frequently played records, like the K&D Sessions, and many from labels like Viewlexx, Clone, Perlon, Palette, Audiomatique, Poker Flat, Border Community, Kompakt, Apnea, Tresor, Planet Mu, Warp, Ninja Tune, and their sublabels). Over 15 years, I spent roughly $40,000 on about 3,000 records. Back then, a 12” single cost $7.99-$9.99, and a 2xLP was $20-$30. Only special editions exceeded $30. Recently, I checked my collection’s value based on Discogs’ marketplace and the average price of NM editions. They’re worth nearly $400,000 at average prices. If they sold for 75% of the max prices listed, they’d be worth over a million. That’s insane. Not that I’m selling—just never imagined they’d be such a solid investment.
