  • Mingus' Best Work

    5 out of 5 stars
    Inès IglesiasNovember 3, 2025

The sound quality on this pressing is way better than I thought it would be, with a fantastic, authentic stereo sound. This album is absolutely brilliant, in my opinion, it's Mingus' best work (he doesn't even play a single note on the bass here); I'm in love with every single track. But wow, Passions of A Man! I'd definitely suggest giving it a listen if you're into it, and make sure to check out the interview with Charles Mingus and the album's producer, Nesuhi Ertegun. You can find it in full on Youtube.

  • Mingus Masterpiece Shines

    5 out of 5 stars
    Carl HerrmannSeptember 1, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is right up there with a Tone Poet release, quality-wise. The main difference is the drum placement - they're positioned towards the rear and left-center of the soundstage, whereas on Tone Poet releases, they're usually in one of the channels. Blue Note sometimes centers the drums, but not on this record. Consequently, the drums have a slightly softer presence. That's not the case with the brass instruments, though. They're placed in the left and right channels and sound incredibly prominent. The loudness level is a bit on the lower side. The piano has a similar tone to Rudy van Gelder's recordings, which tend to be a bit softer. The pressing quality is excellent, but there are a few pops and light clicks in the quieter passages. However, there are also long stretches without any surface noise. As a pressing, I'd rate it 9/10. The performance is flawless, a solid 10/10. So, overall, I'd give this release a 9.5 out of 10. The performance is absolutely phenomenal, and as always with Mingus, there are unique sounds you won't hear anywhere else. This record is definitely worth every penny.

  • WaxTimes Delivers Fantastic Sound

I've got 10 WaxTimes, and this one's fantastic, just like most of them. Not every single one, mind you. But this particular model? It's got a fantastic sound.

  • Mingus Wild Stereo Pressing

    5 out of 5 stars
    Esmée SuárezFebruary 23, 2025United States🇺🇸

This pressing is quite decent, I suppose it's the first US stereo release, adore this album, Mingus seems like he's got a wild hair up his ***, disrespectful, and you can't top Rahsaan Roland Kirk... one could picture Mr. Kirk adding to the relaxed vibes and humor of the recording... my copy is in great shape except for a scratch on side two that you can hear during the first track...aaarrrgh... well I have it on CD as well °•°... it's awesome to possess that crisp 60 plus year old white tip-on sleeve as a wonderful keepsake... isn't that what it's all about... commodity fetishism at its finest...

  • Mingus' Piano Brilliance

    4 out of 5 stars
    Ann BrunoDecember 27, 2024United States🇺🇸

I'm on the same page as everyone else - fantastic tunes, solid recording. Mingus is on piano here, not his usual bass. I'm curious about Doug Watkins' experience - being the bassist for Mingus, the demanding perfectionist.

Product description

This 2022 Reissue Remastered LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

Dive into the vibrant and eclectic world of Charles Mingus with his 1962 studio album, "Oh Yeah." This album is a testament to Mingus's versatility and genius, showcasing his prowess on the piano rather than his signature upright bass. Recorded in 1961 and released through Atlantic Records, "Oh Yeah" is a wild, adventurous, and deeply personal exploration of jazz in all its forms.

The album features a stellar lineup, including Doug Watkins on bass, Dannie Richmond on drums, and the extraordinary Roland Kirk on a variety of wind instruments. Mingus himself takes the lead on piano and vocals, adding a bluesy, soulful touch to the compositions. The tracks range from the playful and energetic "Hog Calling Blues" to the politically charged "Oh Lord Don't Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb on Me," demonstrating Mingus's ability to blend humor, social commentary, and musical innovation.

"Oh Yeah" is a celebration of jazz in its many guises—from hard bop and bebop to cool and free jazz. Each track is a unique composition, reflecting Mingus's boundless creativity and his deep roots in traditional jazz. The interplay between the musicians is electric, capturing the raw energy and passion of a live performance.

The album's ten tracks, spanning a total of 66 minutes, offer a rich tapestry of sounds and styles. Whether you're a longtime fan of Charles Mingus or new to his music, "Oh Yeah" is an essential addition to any jazz collection. It's a bold statement from one of the genre's most influential figures, showcasing his unparalleled talent and his enduring impact on the world of jazz.
