How do we keep reviews authentic?

Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.

  • Audio Quality Leap

    Elisa LangDecember 24, 2025United States🇺🇸

The audio quality is fantastic. This is clearly a step up from the re-release a couple of years back! To the person who commented below about purchasing three faulty copies, that's some seriously unfortunate luck.

  • Sound Quality Unmatched

    Hazel WagnerDecember 16, 2025United States🇺🇸

The sound is absolutely amazing, with rich details, a spacious feel, and authentic tones. Music Matters have truly outdone themselves.

  • Seek Lower Priced Copies

For those seeking this particular pressing, you might find a couple of copies at a lower price than what's listed on the marketplace, available at Elusive Disc and Acoustic Sounds.

  • Fantastic Album, Great Value

    5 out of 5 stars
    Céline HansenOctober 18, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album's release is absolutely fantastic and comes at a very reasonable cost. For me, I've never had any issues with my Classic Series albums, and Optimal's production quality seems excellent. However, I never shop at Amazon, unlike some folks who post here in the comments. Plus, I'm really liking these new inner sleeves.

  • Mind-Blowing Stereo Legends

    5 out of 5 stars
    Jacob PriceSeptember 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

Wow, this is incredible! The stereo sound effect is mind-blowing, shut your eyes and you're right there with the band. AMAZING pressing, even more amazing album. Anthony Williams on the drums is a monster, there's a killer groove on every track, supercharged by Richard Davis on the bass, throw in Hubbard and Hutcherson to that lineup, oh, and one more. Eric Dolphy? A legend, surrounded by... other legends. Sounds too good to be true, give it a spin yourself, crazy awesome stuff. I'd blast this sh*t into space for all the aliens out there to dig. Mulder, hit me up about that, I'm serious;-)

Product description

This 2022 Reissue LP is pressed on 180g vinyl.

Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch!" is a groundbreaking album that stands as a testament to his innovative spirit and profound influence on the jazz genre. Released in 1964 under Blue Note Records, this seminal work is Dolphy's sole recording as a leader for the iconic label. The album is a masterful blend of free jazz, hard bop, and avant-garde elements, showcasing Dolphy's virtuosity on multiple instruments, including the flute, bass clarinet, and alto saxophone.

Recorded on February 25, 1964, at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, "Out to Lunch!" features a stellar lineup of jazz greats, including Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. The album's five tracks, including the title piece "Out to Lunch" and the hauntingly beautiful "Gazzelloni," offer a captivating journey through Dolphy's unique musical vision. Each composition is a testament to his ability to push boundaries and redefine the possibilities of jazz.

Despite its initial mixed reception, "Out to Lunch!" has since been recognized as a landmark in avant-garde jazz, influencing generations of musicians and listeners alike. The album's intricate compositions and fearless exploration of new musical territories make it a timeless classic. Tragically, Dolphy passed away just two months before the album's release, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate with jazz enthusiasts worldwide. "Out to Lunch!" remains a cornerstone of Dolphy's discography, encapsulating his genius and enduring impact on the world of jazz.
