Hailing from the vibrant music scene of Omaha, Nebraska, Son, Ambulance delivers a richly textured and meticulously crafted third full-length album, Someone Else's Déjà Vu, released in July 2008 via the esteemed Saddle Creek Records. This album marks a bold evolution for the project, now primarily helmed by Joe Knapp, who teams up with collaborators Jeff Koster and Daniel Knapp following a three-year hiatus. Recorded at ARC Studios in December 2007 and mastered by Doug Van Sloun, the album is a sonic tapestry woven with lush analog synths, double bass, saxophone, and vibraphone, featuring contributions from local musicians including members of Tilly and the Wall and The Faint.
Someone Else's Déjà Vu is a vibrant mosaic of retro-inspired sounds, drawing from the psychedelic and space-rock influences of the '70s while weaving in the sunny samba stylings of '60s Brazilian music. Tracks like The Girl From New York City evoke the breezy sophistication of Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, while the trippy instrumentation of Legend of Lizeth channels the trippy grandeur of early Pink Floyd. The album also balances bright, groovy melodies with wistful, introspective ballads, as heard in Yesterday Morning and the orchestral beauty of the title track.
Produced by Knapp, Koster, and AJ Mogis—who also handled recording and mixing—the album is a testament to the creative synergy of the Omaha music community. With its intricate arrangements and nostalgic yet fresh sound, Someone Else's Déjà Vu invites listeners into a world where vintage textures meet modern indie sensibilities, making it a standout release that reaffirms Son, Ambulance’s place in the indie rock pantheon.
