  • Jazz Supergroup's Refined Gem

    5 out of 5 stars
    Margot RussellFebruary 14, 2025United States🇺🇸

In this album, we find a refined supergroup featuring Frisell on guitar, Jason Moran on piano, Thomas Morgan on double-bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums, alongside Bro and Konitz. "Black is All Colors at Once" opens with gentle guitar notes, followed by the then 86-year-old Konitz (who would sadly pass away from Covid in 2020, six years later) delivering deep, thoughtful sounds and shining high tones, sustained beautifully over the harmonizing guitars and Morgan's swift yet quiet bass. "Haiti," a delightful slow shuffle, showcases a rare Konitz performance on soprano sax; "Milford Sound" pays homage to Cyrille's renowned contemporary Milford Graves with a subtly swinging rhythm. "Pearl River" is an intense, free-rhythmic piece featuring all the musicians, while the horn-free "Mar Del Plata" is a charming, songlike waltz that would fit perfectly on any of Frisell's top albums. With its stellar lineup, understated themes, and spontaneous ensemble ideas, "Taking Turns" is a true gem.

Product description

This LP was released in 2025.

Jakob Bro, the acclaimed Danish guitarist and composer, presents "Taking Turns," a captivating journey through the realms of contemporary jazz. This album, released on ECM Records, is a testament to Bro's unique compositional style and his ability to blend subtle, spontaneous ideas into a cohesive and engaging whole. Recorded in New York's Avatar Studios a decade ago and recently mixed in Copenhagen, "Taking Turns" features a multi-generational cast of improvisers, including the legendary Bill Frisell and the late, great alto saxophonist Lee Konitz.

The album's seven tracks, spanning a total of 40 minutes, are a fine compendium of Bro's engagingly layered compositions. From the evocative "Black Is All Colors at Once" to the serene "Milford Sound," each piece showcases Bro's mastery of the guitar and his knack for creating atmospheric, introspective soundscapes. The album's cover design, created by Sascha Kleis, complements the music perfectly, adding a visual dimension to the listening experience.

"Taking Turns" is not just an album; it's an experience that showcases Jakob Bro's evolution as an artist.
