  Alien, Italian flair…The 1980s were a remarkably fruitful era for low-budget sci/fi flicks that drew heavy inspiration from films like “Alien,” “Blade Runner,” “Dawn Of The Dead,” “Escape From New York,” and “The Road Warrior.” With limited funds, these imitations often lacked originality but made up for it with a certain quirky appeal. Music frequently played a pivotal role in elevating these movies, with varying degrees of success (Lucio Fulci’s “Zombi 2” being more triumphant than, say, “Contamination”).The latter film holds its own among these mostly zany Italian tributes, with actors like Ian McCulloch and Louise Marleau lending some gravitas to this story of a one-eyed space invader who arrives on Earth to spawn explosive, toxic eggs. Enhanced by a vividly crafted score from progressive rockers Goblin, their work on Luigi Cozzi’s chaotic nightmare is a refined blend of styles, ranging from disco-funk (“Bikini Island”), jazzy funk beats (“Rush” and “Fright”) to ominous electronic sounds (“Withy,” “Time Is On,” and newly added to this reissue, “Contamination (Alien World).” “Quiet Drops” and an alternate version of “Withy” are mostly subdued, featuring sax and piano offering gentle melodies before an eerie mellotron chorus disrupts the calm. A must-have for Goblin enthusiasts, they might be let down by the noticeable absence of co-founder Claudio Simonetti, who frequently left and rejoined the band to pursue a successful solo career. The ever-changing lineup of musicians resulted in various iterations (and many recordings) from the band of ‘Goblins’ up to this day. Released as “Alien Contamination” or as a direct follow-up to the Ridley Scott masterpiece, the music, while always pleasant, doesn’t quite reach the pinnacle of the band’s impressive achievements with the Dario Argento thrillers “Deep Red” and “Suspiria.” The film is skillfully put together by the prolific Luigi Cozzi, himself a collaborator of Argento. The album gained enough popularity to have some of its more acclaimed tracks featured in the film “Virus.”

  I'm a massive Goblin enthusiast and this is genuinely one of their top-tier yet underrated soundtracks. It stands shoulder to shoulder with Profondo Rosso and Tenebre, in my view. I won’t claim it rivals Suspiria, as that’s in a league of its own BUT Contamination is an incredible soundtrack! The opening piece “Connexion” is a tour de force—check it out on YouTube if you're interested. Each track is superb and unforgettable. If you're a Goblin aficionado, this is a must-have.

  Goblin's must-have album. A blend of dark synth prog, funk, and rock. Guarini’s arpeggiator weaves through the rock-funk beats of Pignatelli and Marangolo. Among Goblin’s finest works. Calls for a vinyl relesae.
