While I'm not overly enthusiastic about the album as a whole, this version is fantastic and certainly an improvement over the CD I own.

Like many DT enthusiasts, I've been buying all their CDs since '92, and I truly adore this album—it's definitely in my top 3 favorites. I grabbed the LP when it dropped, but I was really let down by the sound quality... it's got this terrible MP3-like noise! The CD, though, sounds way, way better. I'm pretty sure it was pressed from some compressed digital source.
In my opinion, this is the finest Dream Theater album featuring Mike Mangini. Initially, I considered rating it a 4 out of 5, as it doesn't quite reach the heights of Dream Theater's classic works like Images and Words, Awake, and Scenes From A Memory. However, the album boasts a refreshing vibe that I truly appreciate, particularly because (with the exception of Build Me Up, Break Me Down) it moves away from the nu-metal influences of Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds, and instead, returns to the band's roots. Some individuals have even suggested that A Dramatic Turn Of Events is a deliberate replica of Images and Words. They do have a slight point with On The Backs Of Angels echoing Pull Me Under, and Far From Heaven and Breaking All Illusions resembling Wait For Sleep and Learning To Live. But beyond that, the comparison is rather absurd, as Build Me Up, Break Me Down doesn't sound anything like Another Day, and Images and Words contains eight tracks, unlike the nine here. Lost Not Forgotten also shares similarities with Under A Glass Moon due to its Middle Eastern undertones, but the songs are not positioned in the same order on the tracklist. I'm puzzled about how Dream Theater's subsequent albums went off track after this one. It felt like their creative energy was at its peak (especially noticeable in the instrumental prowess of Lost Not Forgotten, Bridges In The Sky, and Outcry), and they had a promising future ahead. Unfortunately, the two albums that followed were quite disappointing.
