Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, I absolutely adore this pressing, it sounds so clear.
I pitted the Music On Vinyl release against this German original. I figured the MOV version was as good as it gets, but the original's crispness blew me away, like someone had removed a haze from the MOV. Absolutely fantastic!
As cool as a winter's eve, that's Awake. Dream Theater's third album is the shadowy counterpart to its triumphant forerunner. Its complexity makes it hard to grasp, with Awake's frosty ambiance and sorrowful tunes standing in stark contrast to the warmth and optimism of Images and Words. Intellectual, tense, heavy yet enigmatic and contemplative, Awake is a tangled web of hyper-technical metal, tough to unravel, featuring a massive guitar distortion (Pantera's impact is clear, even in the riff crafting) and a pristine, polished sound production (John Purdell and Duane Baron craft a layered, intricate sonic realm). Space Dye-Vest, reminiscent of Pink Floyd's vibes, marks Kevin Moore's exit. Crucial to Dream Theater's growth, Moore's compositional input will be a loss that can't be replaced for the band's melodic progression.
This sounds really great. The quality of this pressing is amazing to me. I'd definitely suggest it.
While it might not beat the original CD or my ETR version, I reckon it's still a steal at its current price. This pressing is absolutely worth having for this fantastic album.
