This remaster sounds great, with a smooth flow, excellent dynamics, and clear imaging. It's more laid-back compared to the MoFi Dire Straits remasters. I'm a fan of both, but they're quite distinct, as the MoFi one feels a tad warmer to me.
My version's a tad loud but I reckon that's 'cause it's been passed around a lot. Still slapping it with a 5 though, 'cause it's an insane album. Easily in my top 10 ever, and this copy sounds pretty darn amazing.
Among the first CDs I ever listened to, this one truly enchanted me. Even with all the criticism it's received over time, it still sounds remarkably good to my ears. And when I stack up all the different versions and remasters, the one that takes the top spot on my shelf is this original release. It's the sound the artists and producers intended for us to experience back in '85. Perhaps in another hundred years, someone will come out with a better version, but that'll be for the ears of the future. As for me, nothing beats the 1985 edition.
It hit me just now, at my age, that the flawless copy I purchased way back in '85... turns out the B side's a tad off-center. DM-3, I reckon it's variant 3. You can actually hear the difference on the inner tracks. Anyone else noticed this? I mostly spin the remastered CD version, so this original hasn't seen much action. I gave it a play last night to check on its condition. Watched the needle wobble back and forth on the B side.
I must say, this is absolutely phenomenal, far surpassing any expectations I had. It's hands down the most breathtaking rendition of this masterpiece I've ever encountered.
