  • Tyner's Timeless Jazz Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    geujoik46November 22, 2025United States🇺🇸

what an amazing album, the first pressing is still pretty affordable and it sounds incredible! ... wayne shorter delivers some fantastic solos on soprano and tenor as well as gary bartz on alto... alice coltrane blends in beautifully with her harp in 3 out of 4 tracks and mccoy tyner is exploring new territories with his compositions (to be continued on milestone later). flawless drumming by elvin jones; there's even some flute and bell playing here (the later solo by carter haha!) ...so much variety in the sounds! this could be tyner's own take on a love supreme. way ahead of its time... if it was released today it would probably be jazz album of the year, for some... any year.

  • Tyner's Timeless Modal Masterpiece Revived

    5 out of 5 stars
    Vifojuq_FeotfiSeptember 12, 2025

Taped way back in February 1970 at the iconic Rudy Van Gelder’s studio, "Extensions" captures McCoy Tyner during a crucial phase post his work with Coltrane. By the time this album hit the shelves in 1973, Tyner had already made a name for himself as a leading figure in post-bop and modal jazz, and "Extensions" only cemented that status. The ensemble here is truly stellar: Gary Bartz on alto sax, Wayne Shorter on soprano sax, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, plus Alice Coltrane on harp — an unusual addition that lends the album its otherworldly feel. The synergy among these musicians is palpable; they challenge and complement Tyner’s dynamic, percussive piano style, crafting music that feels vast yet deeply rooted. Musically, "Extensions" is a blend of opposites. Tyner’s rich chord voicings and relentless left hand ground the group, while Shorter and Bartz deliver melodic lines that shift between intense passion and serene reflection. Alice Coltrane’s harp introduces a nearly spiritual layer, elevating tracks like “Message from the Nile” into something both celestial and grounded. The Tone Poet reissue does this masterpiece justice. Pressed on 180g vinyl, it delivers outstanding clarity, depth, and warmth, letting Van Gelder’s recording shine in a way that feels direct and personal. The packaging, true to the original release (right down to the vintage price code), adds a hint of nostalgia while showcasing Blue Note’s dedication to preserving its heritage. "Extensions" isn’t just another McCoy Tyner record — it’s one of his most resonant works, blending raw power with ethereal beauty. This reissue is a must-have not only for Tyner fans but for anyone who cherishes the bold spirit of late-60s and early-70s jazz. Verdict: A timeless modal/post-bop gem, rejuvenated through an audiophile-quality reissue.

  • Top McCoy Pick, Superb Sound

    5 out of 5 stars
    WeedZ29July 29, 2025

Among my top McCoy picks, this one's a real gem. The sound quality is just superb. I'm a big fan of those non-gatefold covers on certain Tone Poet editions—they're so sturdy and the colors pop. All in all, an absolutely delightful experience. 10/10!

  • Tone Poet Flaw

    5 out of 5 stars
    dbogropyJuly 22, 2025United States🇺🇸

Yet another fantastic sounding Tone Poet reissue! Sadly, I'm sending back my copy to get a replacement because there's a pressing flaw on the opening track of side one. The record really should've been caught during quality control. But it's a stellar McCoy Tyner album, masterfully remastered.

  • Alice Coltrane's Timing Flaws

    5 out of 5 stars
    kuuppeyhvJune 11, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is fantastic, the pressing is top-notch, and there's NO gatefold, which is perfect because I can't stand those things—they take up too much room. I don't want to look at photos; I just want to listen to the music. And my thoughts on Alice Coltrane are clear here—she messes up the timing right from her first notes, and her solo is just a bunch of glissandos. I think I could play that better. Why does anyone care about her? Why does she have such a reputation? She can't play music, she can't play jazz, she has no sense of timing or phrasing. All she has is an instrument. On the other hand, Wayne Shorter is amazing here, both on soprano and tenor. He's completely loose and absolutely incredible.
