  • Remix Elevates Classic Album

    5 out of 5 stars
    Thomas DenisDecember 26, 2025

At first glance, you might dismiss this as just another remix to overlook, but give it a chance and you might reconsider. The opening track, Schizoid Man, remains largely unchanged, with only minor tweaks to the inherent distortion. However, the rest of the album is a different story, and upon further listening, you'll truly appreciate the effort put into it. I Talk To The Wind left me astonished. Comparing it to the 2010 reissue with the original mix, it's clear that the original is also well-produced and praised back then. But the remix truly elevates it. What struck me the most was how the vocals in the remix exude such realism. While they might have more presence in the 2010 version, the fact that everything else seems to compete for attention makes it sound flat and artificial in comparison. Here, we get depth and a bass boost that you can feel. I'm so impressed that I might call this a true audiophile test track, as it reveals your system's capabilities through its great soundscape. I might have preferred a bit more shimmer on the drums, but with future upgrades, I'll check if this area is improved, because I'm quite sure it will be. Moving on, I skip some tracks since I already feel the proof has been laid out. Making a 1969 prog effort sound audiophile at times is truly a feat. I'm sure some of the bells and strings on Moonchild are more highlighted and spacious, with the vocals favored to remain more low-end. More interesting, perhaps, is whether it's quiet or not, which I'll get to later. Lastly, I just wanted to mention how the final track has better separation, fullness, and air than the 2010 version. Vocally, I hear more clearly how five pillars of sound appear, singing the title track oh so majestically, over the general blob of sound on the original mix. How much of these differences should be attributed to the mixing or the mastering, I can't say and don't feel I need to. This is just a passion project through and through. Going back to how the opening track is kept very much the same, it's not a sign of laziness but a smart decision to keep what's rough and gritty as it classically is. This shows an understanding of the material which is quintessential to making a great product. Pressing-wise, this is excellent as well. Near dead quiet playing surfaces are needed for some of these songs. And while Moonchild isn't void of any pops or crackles, that's just my copy, and it did come with 2 visible marks that lightly tick. You might be luckier. It is the quietest vinyl version I've heard yet anyway. I haven't even gotten to the second disc with extras yet, and I'm already wishing they do remix projects like this for all the other KC albums. I would buy them all again! Equipment Used: Technics SL1210GR Paratrace tipped Nagaoka MP-200 Cyrus 2 Amplifier System Fidelity SF-3050 Tower Speakers

Absolutely, this is the genuine article if you're after a pristine and well-sounding take on the original mix. Owned a fairly clean copy of the 2010 black vinyl edition, but this is an upgrade in every way and it's incredibly detailed. Thrilled I went for it.
