The track "Close To Me" initially drew me to this album, as I first heard it during a romantic scene in the movie Accepted. For quite some time, I only had that song, and back then, I wasn't familiar with The Cure. After discovering they also performed "Friday I'm In Love" (which isn't on this release), I decided to explore their music further. With so many albums under their belt, I was unsure where to begin. But since "Close To Me" remains my favorite song by them, I figured starting with the album it came from made sense. Seeing that it received high praise from AllMusic critics, I added it to my ever-expanding list of albums to check out. I finally got around to listening to it recently, and wow... what a revelation. I'm absolutely loving this album. I hadn't really delved into the New Wave scene of the Eighties before, as I'm more of a rock person, but I'm thrilled I gave this album a chance. The lyric writing here is phenomenal; almost every line feels like a caption for a piece of art or a scene in a play. The sounds are utterly captivating, shifting in tempo and atmosphere with each track—for instance, the Egyptian vibe in "The Blood" compared to the slow, romantic feel of "Close To Me." Rob Smith isn't the most technically skilled vocalist, but his voice gives the album an artistic edge, making it stand out, which, if I recall correctly, is what New Wave is all about, right? The album is a solid length, clocking in at just over 30 minutes with 10 tracks, and it doesn't feel drawn out. Looking at it in my iTunes library, most tracks are rated 4 stars or higher (5-star ratings are rare for me), with the only songs I'm not as fond of being "The Baby Screams" and "Sinking." But that's just 2 out of 10 tracks, so 80% of the album is fantastic in my book! In short, if you're looking to dive into The Cure's discography or explore 80s New Wave, start with this album—it's absolutely worth it. You can probably guess my top track recommendation, but here it is anyway: "Close To Me." After that, give "Push," "Six Different Ways," "Koyoto Song," and "In Between Days" a listen.
Delighted that my all-time favorite Cure album is now the best sounding one in my collection :)
I can't believe how incredible all The Cure's reissues and remasters sound, this one's fantastic! It's my first time listening to this album, and it's absolutely stunning on my setup. I've got a (1989-80)Technics SL-B3 connected to a (1982-83) Harman Kardon hk350i tuner, and some (1989) Cerwin Vega AT-60s to treat my ears right.
Absolutely amazing sound quality! This is a superb pressing of one of my all-time favorite albums. I just wish it wasn't one of those 'you'll struggle to remove the vinyl from the inner sleeve without hurting either, and then you'll need to find another storage solution' types of releases, though.
Great pressing all in all. The mix is really well executed, just a tad heavy on the bass. This version sounds way better and fuller than my 1985 CD of The Cure's The Head On The Door; I even picked up on some new sounds I'd never noticed before. The packaging is top-notch: labels, sleeves, and printing are all high quality. Downsides: I did notice some surface noise, quite evident during song changes and at the start of each side; also, the disc is a bit off-center. 4 stars.
