  • Bonus CD's Top Tracks

    5 out of 5 stars
    Miles GriffinDecember 27, 2025United States🇺🇸

The initial three tracks on this bonus CD are absolutely worth the cost of the whole thing. It's pretty cool to listen to the demo take of Tomorrow Never Dies (sic), and there's some enjoyable work-in-progress stuff alongside the already-out B-sides (though honestly can't quite picture Can I Have My Balls Back Please or My Erection ever being, well, finished). But yeah, It's A Dirty World and Like A Friend are definitely two of the standout tracks from the entire TIH period.

  • Vinyl Sounds Fantastic

    5 out of 5 stars
    Niels WoodNovember 15, 2025United States🇺🇸

Owned the double CD for what feels like forever and just managed to grab a vinyl copy at an awesome price. And, wow, this one sounds fantastic, not a single problem. I've always thought Different Class was their best, but now I'm starting to have my doubts… though I can't make up my mind that quickly. Guess I'll have to give the CD another listen ;).

  • Pulp's Best Album, Mediocre Discs

    4 out of 5 stars
    Faye WrightApril 22, 2025United States🇺🇸

This is an amazing album, possibly Pulp's finest work. The discs are a bit of a letdown being 120g, and while the sound is clear, it seems to lack some richness. It's not a terrible pressing, just not as good as it could've been in my view. The discs are at least free from any noise, but I wouldn't have paid more than £20 for it.

  • Punchy Sound with Synths

    4 out of 5 stars
    Xavier GrayApril 20, 2025United States🇺🇸

this one sounds pretty good. i've only got an original cd to compare it to, but if you bump up the bass and turn down the treble, you get a punchy sound with some synths and strings standing out.

  • Pulp Vinyl Sounds Outstanding

    5 out of 5 stars
    James GrantDecember 31, 2024United States🇺🇸

This vinyl sounds absolutely fantastic! I managed to find a near mint, barely played copy, and there's not a single hint of surface noise. The sound is incredibly clear and powerful. I'm usually pretty doubtful about Pulp's vinyl releases, particularly their 90s ones. I've had sealed first pressings of both 'His 'n' Hers' and 'Different Class,' and I wasn't blown away by the sound quality on any of them. But 'This is Hardcore' is in a class of its own. The sound quality is outstanding! It's likely because it's a double LP, and MPO did an amazing job with the pressing. This is the version you want! Believe me, you won't be disapointed.

Product description

This is a 2020 Reissue released as a 2LP set.

Released in 1998, "This Is Hardcore" is the sixth studio album by the iconic English rock band Pulp, marking a significant evolution from their previous, chart-topping work. Following the immense success of "Different Class," the band faced internal friction, notably the departure of guitarist and violinist Russell Senior. Frontman Jarvis Cocker retreated to New York to write in isolation, resulting in an album that reflects a darker, more introspective phase of the band's career.

The album, released on March 30, 1998, via Island Records, blends elements of Britpop and Madchester, creating a unique and captivating sound that stands out in Pulp's discography. With a runtime of just over an hour, "This Is Hardcore" features 13 tracks that delve into themes of fame, isolation, and the complexities of modern life. The title track, "This Is Hardcore," is a standout, using pornography as an analogy to comment on the nature of fame and celebrity culture. The song samples the Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra's "Bolero on the Moon Rocks," adding a layer of depth and intrigue.

The album opens with "The Fear," setting a tense and introspective tone that carries throughout the record. Tracks like "Dishes" and "Party Hard" showcase Pulp's signature wit and social commentary, while "Help The Aged" and "Seductive Barry" offer a more melancholic perspective. "Glory Days" and "The Day After The Revolution" provide a sense of reflection and closure, rounding out an album that is as thought-provoking as it is musically rich.

"This Is Hardcore" was well-received critically, further cementing Pulp's status as one of the most innovative and influential bands of their time. The album's unique feel, characterized by its dark, depressed, and tense atmosphere, reflects the personal struggles and artistic growth of the band members. Despite the challenges faced during its creation, "This Is Hardcore" stands as a testament to Pulp's enduring talent and their ability to evolve and adapt, making it a compelling addition to any music collection.
